Biological Filter Media

The main task of biological filter media is to offer the best colonization conditions for the bacteria cultures so that after a short time a bacteria lawn develops. The bacteria feed on dirt particles of all kinds and convert substances critical for the aquarium. After the first cleaning process by the mechanical filter media (e.g. EHEIM MECH or MECHpro) the biological filtration is the most important. It provides for clear, healthy water and stable water values. That's why we have invested a lot of research work into the development of biological filter media.

Optimized bio-filter medium with perfect volume usage, long intervals between cleaning, and top decomposition performance.

SUBSTRATpro consists of pearl-shaped sintered glass. The spherical shape gives a high bulk density. Thus the whole volume in the filter (filter baskets or modules) can be utilized. Also, the optimum surface of the beads provides intensive colonization of the important purification bacteria.

Due to the high number of bacteria, peak nitrite loads are more easily reduced and the maintenance intervals of the filter material are longer.

Tips:

Never clean or change all the filter media together in one operation (and never clean too rigorously). The bacteria cultures must not be completely destroyed, otherwise, re-colonization will be retarded. The filter baskets in the external filters and filter modules in the internal filters aqua ball and biopower are ideal for partial cleaning.
